Sign Language
I began teaching myself sign language when I was 15 in order to communicate with a new friend who was deaf. At 16, I enrolled in North Hennepin community college's extension program for sign language. I waited (and waited, and waited) for the college systems to accept ASL as an official second language so that I could apply it toward my degree requirements. Finally, they did, and NHCC began offering accredited courses. I took 1-5 then successfully tested for proficiency at the University of Minnesota.

Baby Sign
A few years ago, my dear friend Kristin (also hearing) enlightened me -- and demonstrated -- on how teaching sign language to her hearing toddler improved communications between parent and child.

This little one is signing the word "more" -- as in "Give me another f-ing cookie or I'll sh-t my pants on our new sofa. Oh yeah...."please?" |

I learned that children, even from infancy, have the capacity to learn to communicate through sign, even though they can't talk yet. Turns out that babies develop muscles in their hands before the muscles they need to talk.
